CCTV cameras have been installed in Thamel, Kathmandu’s bustling tourist hotspot. Spearheaded by the Thamel Tourism Development Council in collaboration with Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, the initiative aims to boost the area’s cleanliness, aesthetics, and safety.
Bhabishwor Sharma, Council Chairperson, emphasized that the CCTV cameras are integral to maintaining the area’s cleanliness, beauty, and security, thereby enhancing peace and order. A total of 80 cameras have been installed across key thoroughfares like Lainchour Marg, Chhetrapati Marg, Nursing Chowk Marg, Chaksibari Marg, Satghumti Marg, JP Line Marg, and Paryatan Marg, with plans for an additional 112 cameras, including larger ones.
Before installation, a comprehensive assessment involving representatives from KMC, the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, and the Thamel Tourism Development Council was conducted to determine the required number and strategic locations for the CCTV cameras.
Sahadev Dhamala, Council Vice-Chair, highlighted the significance of CCTV cameras in curbing criminal activities within the Thamel area, underscoring their role in bolstering security measures.
The Thamel Tourism Development Council, established in 2047 BS and comprising over 2,000 landlords and business owners, aims to foster the development of Thamel as a prominent tourism destination.
