1.Ghonghi
Ghongis are mud water snails that inhabit nearby streams and paddy fields. The Tharu people are fond of this delicacy extremely. There are rumored health advantages as well. Thus, this dish is being looked into by people from different communities. After cleaning and boiling, the snails are thoroughly cooked with a variety of spices, including flaxseed. You can eat ghongis with rice. The native inhabitants of Terai have long consumed this combination as an everyday diet.
2.Dhikri
Dhikri is one of the most popular and unique food. It is created especially for the Maghe festival. Dhikri tastes outstanding when used with chutney. It is nutritious and healthy as well. The main component of dhikri is rice flour; no other ingredients are needed. It is steamed in earthen pots “Dhaki” and looks like steamed rice cakes with a sausage-like shape.
3.Bhakka
Bhakka is one of the most well-liked snacks among the Tharu people. Bhakka is a light steamed cake made with rice flour. They are typically consumed with freshly made tomato chutney or achar for breakfast. Bhakka has a hint of sweetness and is made with freshly harvested rice flour.It’s now one of Terai’s most well-known street foods. In Kathmandu, some eateries have begun serving Bhakka as well.
4.Bagiya
The majority of people in the Terai region love bagiya, another one of the popular dishes made by the Tharu community. On auspicious occasions like Tihar and other interesting celebrations, it is prepared. With a few exceptions of the shape and fillings, which are more similar to Yomari from the Newar community, Bagiya is a salty snack made of rice flour that is comparable to momo.It is served with tomato achar after being boiled in water.
5.Sidhra
A small fish called sidhra is cooked with the stem of a colocasia, turmeric, garlic, radish, and chillies. This dish is shaped like cakes, which are then sun-dried before being served. The delicacy has a strong aroma and a slightly bitter taste, but it is still popular among the native Tharu people. This dish connects well with curries or soups.
