A 1,545-meter-long Malhaniya multispan suspension bridge is under construction to connect Dhanusha and Siraha districts.
Approximately two to seven days ago, the bridge, which is expected to see around a hundred people crossing from both Nepal and India daily, began its operation. Built at a cost of around 500 to 800 thousand NPR, the bridge is anticipated to ease travel for locals and tourists, especially during monsoon seasons, when crossing Maharkpun Khola posed risks.
The bridge connects various villages, benefiting approximately 160 households, and it is expected to witness frequent foot traffic, with daily crossings ranging from 500 to 800 people, according to Biltu Mandal, the chairman of Katkatha Rural Municipality-6 in Janaknandani. Before the bridge’s construction, the area experienced significant congestion, especially during the monsoon season, but with the bridge, travel time has significantly reduced, making it easier for both locals and tourists.
Mandal added, “The area around the bridge is bustling with activity. This has become a significant source of income for the locals.” The bridge not only facilitates travel for surrounding villages but also attracts tourists, providing them with easy access to local markets and amenities.
Furthermore, the bridge has led to the establishment of new businesses and has boosted local economic activities. Geeta Devi, who owns a shop in Katkatha-6, mentioned that the bridge has increased foot traffic in the area, leading to higher sales and income. She stated that before the bridge’s construction, daily sales ranged from two to five thousand NPR, but now they have increased significantly.
The bridge has a capacity of 540 metric tons and can accommodate up to 3,886 pedestrians. Construction was completed a month ahead of the scheduled date by the contracting company.
Solar panels have been installed on the bridge to provide lighting for pedestrians during nighttime, enhancing safety and convenience. According to engineer Vinod Kumar Mandal, who volunteered for the project, ten solar panels have been installed on eight towers of the bridge. The installation of solar panels was carried out with the support of the Physical Infrastructure Development Directorate under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development of Province 2, Janakpur.
