The government of Nepal has announced an ambitious plan to emphasize and modernize traffic management in major cities of the country. Led by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT), this ambitious initiative aims to improve both the visibility and safety of urban areas
A Well-Lit Future
Modern street lights will be installed along major city roadways as part of the project. Energy-efficient and meant to offer continuous lighting day and night, these lights will be installed. By discouraging crime, this not only makes cities more aesthetically pleasing but also increases security.
Modernizing Traffic Flow
A key part of the plan is the installation of modern traffic lights in busy areas. This replaces outdated systems with features that can improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Pilot Project and Expansion Plans
Beginning in mid-July 2024, the initiative will launch a trial program in the Kathmandu Valley, which includes Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. The government intends to extend the program to additional significant cities, including Pokhara, Nepalgunj, Biratnagar, Janakpur, and Birgunj, after a fruitful trial phase.
Budget and Timeline
For this project, which is expected to cost more than Rs 100 million, MoPIT is now seeking the required funding. To guarantee a timely launch, the ministry is working toward providing funding in the following fiscal year (2024–25).
