Unforgettable Experience: Witnessing Chaite Chhath in Nepal’s Vibrant Mithila Region 2024

This morning, April 15, 2024, the Chaite Chhath festival came to an end, bringing the Mithila region of Nepal to life with brilliant colors and joyful rituals. On Saturday night, once the Kharna ritual was finished, devotees who had been keeping strict fasts celebrated the festival’s conclusion by making prayers (argha) to the rising sun.

In Nepal, Chaite Chhath, also called Basanti Chhath, is a colorful festival that falls in the autumn and spring seasons twice a year. The celebrations for this year culminated in a stunning exhibition of faith and cultural diversity. On Sunday evening, when the sun sank and rose on Monday morning, worshippers stood in the placid waters of ponds, rivers, and wells and prayed to the sun.

A Celebration of Peace, Prosperity, and Family

For the Maithili community, particularly those who live in the Terai region of Nepal, Chaite Chhath is an extremely important and highly personal celebration. The celebration, which lasts for four days, is full of customs and rituals centered upon the worship of Surya, the Sun God, and his sister, Chhathi Maiya. According to devotees, keeping the fasts and customs connected to Chhath bestows on one’s family riches, longevity, and good health.
