Kathmandu, Nepal – May 3, 2024 – Many internet users in Nepal could not access the internet and those who were able to face slow connections and outages yesterday, due to the bandwidth supply dispute between Nepali ISPs and Indian bandwidth suppliers.
They reduced the bandwidth due to the remaining payment dues from the Nepali ISPs in the equivalent amount of approximately 3 billion Nepalese rupees.
The situation with the low bandwidth has caused many who use the internet significant inconveniences in Nepal. Some realized to be very slow bandwidth, and some lost their connection and went without it for hours. The disruption leads to problematic situations for businesses and those working remotely, members of the society who depend on the internet for their daily activities.
However, it seems that the situation is an improved one at the moment. The representatives from the Nepali ISPs came to an understanding with Indian bandwidth suppliers and an agreement was reached, which brought about the full resumption of the bandwidth.
Internet services in Nepal are back online after ISPs promise to pay overdue fees.
After a brief interruption, internet services in Nepal have returned after internet service providers (ISPs) promised to settle overdue bills to Indian bandwidth sellers. The government of Nepal stopped ISPs from sending bandwidth money for 9 months. The government has not provided foreign exchange to Nepali ISPs to pay for their Indian vendors. This has been the subject of a dispute between the government and the ISPs, which included Vianet Communication and World Link Nepal. Due to the disagreement, Indian companies stopped providing bandwidth, which affected internet services in Nepal.
The ISPs promised to pay the unpaid sums to the Indian companies in letters they sent in response to the disruption as soon as possible. The Indian corporations agreed to restore the bandwidth delivery due to this action.
