Nepal, located in the Himalayas, is a prominent voice for mountainous regions, particularly those at risk from the effects of climate change. The country is set to lead the conversation with the International Dialogue on Mountains, People, and Climate Change.
Over 200 representatives from 23 mountainous states, international organizations, and civil society will gather in Kathmandu on May 22nd and 23rd for a discussion to reinforce the global commitment to safeguarding mountain ecosystems and their dependent communities.
Why is this Dialogue Important?
Rising temperatures are causing glaciers to melt rapidly, jeopardizing water security, increasing flood and landslide risks, and destroying fragile ecosystems, despite being our planet’s lifeblood and providing freshwater to over 1.9 billion people.
Nepal, home to the Himalayas, is facing significant climate change, with two-thirds of its glaciers at risk of melting by 2050 as temperatures rise.
Nepal’s Leadership in Climate Action
Nepal’s advocacy for climate change gained global recognition at The UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. For the first time ever, the conference explicitly addressed the mountain climate crisis and called for the Kathmandu Dialogue.
The dialogue is an important step toward a more coordinated and effective approach to mountain conservation. Here’s what the conversation hopes to accomplish:
- Strengthen Collaboration: The dialogue will promote cooperation between mountainous nations and stakeholders, resulting in a unified stance in international climate negotiations.
- Develop Actionable Strategies: Experts will work together to promote resilience in mountain communities through adaptation strategies, sustainable energy solutions, and creative research.
- Secure Climate Finance: The conversation will call for additional financial support for mountain communities on the frontlines of climate change.
- Empower Local Voices: The discussion recognizes the critical role of local communities in environmental protection, and seeks to provide a forum for their concerns and ideas to be heard.
Looking Ahead: A Roadmap for the Future
The Kathmandu Dialogue is a multi-year event aiming to prepare for the 60th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled for June in Bonn, Germany.
The dialogue’s goal is to combine their skills and experiences to provide a comprehensive roadmap for preserving mountain nations.
