Tourism Entrepreneurs and Volunteers United to Restore Phewa Lake

Tourism entrepreneurs and volunteers have started removing water hyacinths from Phewa Lake, which has become unsightly due to the plant’s proliferation. A total of 10 trucks of water hyacinths were removed from the lake till now. The campaign was coordinated by the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, Gandaki Province.

The mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City, Dhan Raj Acharya said that the campaign to remove water hyacinths will be organized every week. He also revealed plans to collaborate with a bio-gas company that is being prepared to manage the water hyacinth. This innovative step aims to not only restore the lake’s beauty but also contribute to sustainable waste management.

Adding to the workforce, approximately 200 students from the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) actively participated in the water hyacinth removal effort, demonstrating their commitment to preserving Nepal’s natural treasures.

Water hyacinth is a fast-growing plant that can quickly cover large areas of water. It can block waterways, disrupt fishing, and harm the environment. The removal of water hyacinths from Phewa Lake is a welcome step to improve the lake’s appearance and protect its ecosystem. The campaign is a joint effort by the tourism industry, the government, and the community, and it is a sign of hope for the future of Phewa Lake.
