Sailung-the land of 100 hills

The Sailung Trek is a special trekking route in the eastern part of Nepal that not many tourists know about. It’s not a place where a lot of people go for trekking, so it’s not crowded like the popular places such as Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Mustang. This trek is great for people who want to explore the natural beauty and culture of Nepal’s hills at altitudes lower than 3200 meters above sea level.

During this trek, you can see amazing views of snowy mountains like Mount Everest, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna. You’ll walk through villages, farmlands with steps like stairs, rivers, waterfalls, and steep hills that can be a bit dangerous. Different groups of people live in these villages, like Tamang, Sherpa, Magar, Gurung, Brahmin, Pahari, and more. So, doing the Sailung Trek gives you a chance to experience their ways of life and traditions.

This trek is not very hard as you’ll be walking at lower heights. It’s a journey that not many people take, so it’s unique. The area has many different types of plants and animals, which is good if you like nature. Sailung means “hundred windy hills” in the local language. So, think about going on this trek and all the wonderful memories you’ll create during your travels.

Sailung Trek Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive from Kathmandu to Mude and trek to Lamche Ahal
Day 2 : Lamche Ahal to Khola Kharka via Thulo Sailung
Day 3 : Khola Kharka to Dhoromba Gumba

Day 4: Dhoromba Gumba to Guranse Bhanjyang

Day 5 : Guranse Bhanjyang to Bholung

Day 6 : Bholung to Thulo Parsel

Day 7: Thulo Parsel to Kottemal

Day 8: Kottemal to Namobuddha

Day 9: Namobuddha to Panauti and drive back to Kathmandu

This 9-day trekking plan is how I experienced the trek. Remember, your experience might be different based on what you like and where you want to go. This trek can be adjusted to match how much time you have for your vacation.

In the areas you’ll visit, there aren’t fancy hotels or restaurants. You can either camp or stay in people’s homes, known as homestays. Camping can be more expensive because you need a whole team, including a cook, kitchen staff, a guide, and more. On the other hand, choosing homestays can lower the cost. Plus, it lets you see how the local people live, their culture, traditions, and religion.

Compared to other treks, this one is very affordable whether you camp or stay in homestays. It’s close to Kathmandu and there’s easily available food. This area isn’t set up a lot for tourists, so things are less expensive. The Sailung Trek plan also includes the Temal Trek, so you can do two treks during one vacation.

Highlights of Sailung

  • Wonderful Landscape
  • Wide range of Mountain View
  • Rhododendron Forest
  • Local Organic Food of Sailung
  • Sailung Village Homestay
  • Mesmerizing Mahabharat Range
  • Snowfall during Winter
  • Sunrise from Sailung View Tower

Best time to do this trek.

In Nepal, there are four seasons: Spring, Autumn, Summer, and Winter. The top times to do the Sailung Trek are Spring, Autumn, and Winter.

Spring is great because it’s warm and the sky is clear. Autumn also has good weather and the right temperature for hiking. In Winter, even though it’s cold, the views around are very clear.
