Is Everest REALLY the World’s Highest Garbage Dump? Nepali Army Mounts Massive Clean-Up Mission (2024 Update)

Kathmandu, Nepal, April 18, 2024 As part of the Clean Mountain Campaign 2024, a committed group of Nepali Army soldiers has set out on a difficult mission to clean Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse.

A Daunting Task for a Worthy Cause

On Wednesday, the 13-person team, under the direction of Major Aditya Karki, left Namche, near Solukhumbu, in the direction of Everest Base Camp. Their goal? To collect a staggering 10 tons of waste from these iconic peaks. This audacious goal draws attention to the mounting pollution issue atop Mount Everest, which is sometimes referred to as the “highest garbage dump in the world.”

Collaboration is Key

In this endeavor, the Nepali Army is not alone. The Ministry of Forest and Environment, the Himalayan Rescue Association of Nepal, the Nepal Mountaineering Association, and the rural municipality of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu have all provided crucial support to the initiative. This cooperative endeavor shows a common dedication to protecting the Himalayas’ pristine beauty.

Raising Awareness Along the Way

The team’s trek to Everest Base Camp, estimated to take around seven days, will double as an awareness campaign. They plan to interact with local communities and clean the trekking route, sending a powerful message about environmental responsibility.

A Legacy of Stewardship

There is more to the Clean Mountain Campaign 2024 than merely cleanup work. It is evidence of the Nepali Army’s commitment to preserving Nepal’s breathtaking Himalayan region for future generations. Their efforts help combat environmental problems on a worldwide scale, such as pollution and temperature rise.

This campaign is a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we all share to protect our planet.
