Great news for travelers! Effective May 1, 2024, Nepali citizens will no longer have to pay visa fees to visit China. This reciprocal move follows Nepal’s policy of offering free visas to Chinese tourists since 2016.
The decision to waive visa fees for Nepalis signifies a commitment to strengthening the relationship between the two countries, following discussions during Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha’s March 2024 visit to China.
The Nepal Tourism Board anticipates a surge in tourist traffic between Nepal and China, particularly in 2024, with 12,093 Chinese tourists arriving in Nepal in March, up from 9,180 in February and 1,436 in January, according to NTB statistics.
The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu states that express visa services, which can cost between NPR 2,700 and NPR 4,000 (approximately USD 21.50 to USD 32.00), will still be charged.
It’s important to note that Nepal has been offering free visas to Chinese citizens for several years. This move by China represents a welcomed gesture of reciprocity.
The free visa program is expected to significantly boost Nepal’s tourism industry, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the increasing number of Chinese tourists and visa-ease for Nepalis, the goal is to reach pre-pandemic levels, as seen in 2019 with 169,543 Chinese tourists.
The free visa program is a positive development for Nepal and China, fostering stronger ties and promoting a thriving tourism industry.
