“Kathmandu-Tarai Expressway: Major Tunnel Breakthroughs”

The ambitious Kathmandu-Tarai Expressway project, which aims to connect Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, to Nijgadh in the southern plains, has reached important building milestones. This huge infrastructure project aims to change transport between these two critical locations by dramatically lowering travel time.

Key Tunnel Breakthroughs

The progress of Nepal’s Kathmandu-Tarai Expressway, marked by breakthroughs in the Dhedre, Lendanda, and Mahadevtar tunnels, enhanced connectivity to Nijgadh.

Dhedre Tunnels Achieve Breakthroughs

The highway has achieved a key milestone with the completion of two tunnels at Dhedre, Makawanpur. On Monday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli pulled the explosion button to mark the completion of the 1.728-kilometer-long Kathmandu-Nijgadh tunnel. Previously, on May 24, the equivalent 1.653-kilometer-long tunnel (Nijgadh-Kathmandu) reached breakthrough status. These tunnels are the project’s fourth such milestone, demonstrating progress toward linking Kathmandu and Nijgadh.

Lendanda Tunnels Make Progress

Both tunnels at Lendanda have seen successful breakthroughs. On July 4, the 1,612-meter tunnel, which is part of a twin-tube structure between Makawanpur’s Bakaiya and Gadhi rural towns, broke through. This comes after the May 24 breakthrough of a 1.653-kilometer-long tunnel, proving ongoing progress on this critical part of the road.

Mahadevtar Tunnels: The Longest in the Project

The longest tunnels in the project are being built in Mahadevtar. 2.28 km of the tunnel (Kathmandu-Nijgadh) has been dug, while 2.09 km of the 3.32 km tunnel (Nijgadh-Kathmandu) has been cleaned. These twin tunnels demonstrate the engineering problems and complications involved in the project.

Project Management and Progress

On May 4, 2017, the Nepalese government transferred responsibility for the project to the Nepal Army, which reports to the Department of Roads. Construction began in August 2017, with a four-year completion timeframe. Currently, the highway has an overall progress rate of 35.38 percent. This milestone demonstrates the national force’s dedication and capacity to complete this multibillion-rupee endeavor.

Conclusion

The Kathmandu-Tarai Expressway is a revolutionary infrastructure project that will greatly improve Nepal’s transportation network. With recent tunnel breakthroughs and ongoing construction, the highway is on course to become an important commercial and transit route between Kathmandu and the southern plains. As development continues, the highway will provide long-term economic and social benefits to the area, demonstrating Nepal’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and growing its economy.
