Celebration of Budi Polne festival in Sudurpashchim, 2024

Budi Polne

The Budi Polne festival is among the most important religious festivities in the Sudurpashchim Province of Nepal. It is celebrated mainly in regions like Dhadeldhurathe. It falls on Asoj Sankranti every year. The celebration, known for its vibrant rituals and deep-rooted mythology, represents the victory of good over evil.

The Budi Polne festival’s main highlight is the burning of a sculpture of the demoness Putana. According to tradition, demon Budhi aka Rakshashni Putana tried to harm Lord Krishna during the Dwapar Yuga. Putana disguised herself as a caretaker and poisoned Lord Krishna under Kansha’s instruction. However, Lord Krishna detected her disguise and fought against the demon and won. The legendary victory is played out every year with the burning of ‘Budi,’ which represents Putana, at specified locations where locals gather tree branches and construct pine poles.

This year, Asoj Sankranti takes place on Tuesday, when the effigy of Putana will be burned on fire. The festival does not end with the effigy burning; it starts a wave of celebration that includes traditional Deuda dances and numerous games popular across the region. Villagers gather to participate, resulting in a dynamic atmosphere full of joy, music, and unity.

The Budi Polne festival is one of Sudurpashchim’s most anticipated cultural events which
provides a look into the province’s rich history. It celebrates determination and justice in a unique and community way.
