10th PANCON 2024 Highlights Mental Health and Addiction

Nepalgunj has become a hub for mental health discussions as it hosts the 10th National Conference of the Psychiatrists’ Association of Nepal (PANCON 2024). The event, held on November 28–29, 2024, has brought together over 200 mental health professionals, including psychiatrists from Nepal and India, making it a landmark event for the region.

The theme for this year’s conference, “Psychiatry & Addiction: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities,” highlights the urgent need to address addiction as a critical component of mental health care. This event marks the first time such a national-level conference has been organized in Nepalgunj, situated in western Nepal.

Key Discussions and Insights

The conference has facilitated interactions on various topics, including mental health, addiction treatment, and the challenges and opportunities in this field.

  • Prof. Dr. Mohan Belbase emphasized the need to integrate addiction treatment into mental health care.
  • Dr. Manoj Dhungana, General Secretary of the association, stressed the importance of collaboration among mental health organizations, local administrations, and the Ministry of Health to tackle the growing mental health issues linked to addiction.
  • Dr. Anant Adhikari, Director of the Mental Health Hospital in Lalitpur, called for mainstreaming mental health treatment and eliminating societal stigma toward mental health patients.
  • Dr. Anil Karki, President of the Nepal Physicians Association, pointed out the rise of digital addiction as a new mental health challenge alongside traditional substance abuse.

Recognitions and Awards

The conference also honored several individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to mental health:

  • Dr. Saroj Ojha, Head of the Department of Teaching Hospital, and Manav Seva Ashram Nepalgunj were recognized for their significant impact on mental health care.

Government Commitment

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Roshan Pokhrel, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population, who highlighted the government’s acknowledgment of mental health as a growing challenge. Despite the absence of a dedicated department for mental health in the Ministry, he assured that efforts, such as establishing a mental health desk, are underway to address these issues.

Beyond the Conference: Promoting Internal Tourism

The conference also aims to promote Nepalgunj and its surroundings as prime tourism destinations. Attendees were encouraged to explore:

  • Bardiya National Park and Banke National Park, renowned for their rich wildlife.
  • The Karnali Bridge and Chisapani, offering serene natural beauty.
  • The Bageshwori Temple, a major Hindu pilgrimage site.
  • The cultural richness of Tharu Villages in Deukhuri Valley.

A Call to Collaboration and Growth

PAN’s mission to enhance psychiatric care, research, and education aligns seamlessly with the objectives of PANCON 2024. The event has not only fostered meaningful discussions on mental health but has also provided a platform for collaboration across borders and disciplines.

As mental health challenges, including addiction and digital dependency, rise globally, initiatives like PANCON underscore the need for integrated, compassionate care. The insights shared during this conference are expected to pave the way for innovative solutions and strengthen mental health services in Nepal.
