Legend has it that, many years ago, a poor shepherd passed through Devasthal in search of his lost sheep. While walking, he noticed two large stones with small and medium-sized Shiva Lingas on them. Being a Hindu, he offered prayers to the Lingas. As he prayed, a miracle happened, he found a flower on the head of the medium-sized Linga. He took the flower with him.
Soon after, his life changed. His sheep multiplied, and his business grew by double digits. Feeling blessed, the shepherd later learned from a healer (Dhami) that his good fortune came from offering prayers at Devasthal.
Grateful yet unaware of proper rituals, the shepherd returned to Devasthal with a male goat, which he sacrificed on the large stone near the Linga. The stone broke, and blood poured from it. That’s when the shepherd’s life took a turn for the worse.
Realizing his mistake, the shepherd traveled to several other pilgrimages to understand the correct way of worship. He learned that Lord Shiva does not accept animal sacrifices. In remorse, he performed an apology prayer at Devasthal. From then on, word spread, and people began visiting Devasthal for blessings and to offer their prayers.

The Devasthal Trek: An Adventurous Journey
