How Nepali Weddings Are Changing with Time

Weddings in Nepal have been traditionally very much related with culture, tradition and family values. Since times immemorial, they represented the merger of two people as well as the merger of families and communities. Nepali weddings are however evolving with time, with change in lifestyle, mentality and international influence.

The Nepal wedding is no longer a traditional wedding. In their place, they are a wise combination of ancient traditions and new decisions. This development can be a valuable indication of the way the Nepali society itself is changing.

From Long Rituals to Shorter Celebrations

According to tradition, Nepali weddings took several days and were accompanied by a complex of rituals. Entire societies were engaged and feasts were sometimes interminable. In the course of time, this trend has started to change.

Nepali couples these days like less long and more focused ceremonies. Often weddings take just one or two days, due to their busy schedules, increasing prices and shifting priorities. Because of it, couples will be able to focus on the most significant rituals and not to generate extraneous stress.

Love Marriages Are Becoming More Common

Historically, the Nepali society was based on arranged marriage. The large majority of decisions were taken by families and were frequently based on caste, astrology and social background. But this is a tradition that is changing slowly.

Today, love marriages have become much more acceptable. Couples get to meet in the fields of study, employment, travelling and through social media and select their mates on their own. Simultaneously, family acceptance and cultural rites continue to hold a significant position, which establishes a balance between individual decision and culture.

Modern Fashion Meets Traditional Attire

The fashion of wedding ceremonies in Nepal has also changed noticeably. Previously, red saris or lehengas were common amongst brides whereas traditional attires such as daura suruwal were worn by grooms. Now, however, fashion has been made more visible through modern fashion.

Brides are trying pastel colors, designer dresses, even white dresses. Grooms usually prefer suits, sherwanis or fusion. However, the use of traditional clothing will not go away in important rituals, which shows that the cultural identity is still high.

Destination Weddings and New Venues

In the past weddings were held largely at home or in the surrounding temples. Conversely, most couples nowadays prefer hotels, resorts and scenic places. Weddings held at the most popular destinations such as Pokhara, Nagarkot or Nagarkot Valley in Kathmandu Valley are becoming more and more popular. Due to this trend, Nepal is also being considered as a wedding destination and not a travel hot spot as well.

Changing Food Culture at Weddings

Food in Nepal weddings has always been a very important aspect. Masu was traditionally served to the guests with local delicacies such as dal bhat, khasi ko masu, and homemade desserts. Wedding menus today however are a lot more varied.

Several weddings have incorporated international food, live food counters, and custom-made menus. Nevertheless, traditional dishes are still required, and they remind the guests that food still can be seen as a sign of Nepali hospitality and culture.

Smaller Guest Lists and Intimate Wedding

Previously, it was usual and anticipated to invite the whole village. However, today most couples also choose small and close weddings. The reason behind this shift is due to the increased prices and the need to have meaningful celebrations. As a result, weddings are more intimate, giving the couple an opportunity to experience the occasion.

Tradition Still Holds Strong

Despite modern changes, many traditional elements of Nepali weddings still hold strong. The sound of Panche Baja during the janti remains a powerful symbol of celebration and cultural pride. Along with this, rituals like kanyadaan, sindoor, blessings from elders, and traditional processions continue to be respected. Although weddings are becoming more modern, these customs ensure that Nepali weddings stay deeply connected to their roots.
