“Growing Eco-Tourism Boosts Community Forests in Nawalpur’s Wildlife Haven”

Chitwan National Park (CNP) buffer zone in Nawalpur has been a popular destination for tourists and environment lovers hoping to witness animals. Eco-tourism-related activities are booming and drawing more and more tourists.

From Gaidakot to Triveni forest, the CNP buffer zone has become a magnet for wildlife sightings, drawing tourists keen on exploring jungle safaris and glimpsing diverse fauna and avifauna. Nar Bahadur Mahato, Chairman of the Dhakaha Buffer Zone community forest, highlighted the significance of tourism in this region, especially the popularity of jungle safaris that contribute to the forest’s revenue.

The area’s allure extends to aquatic birdlife along the Narayani River and surrounding streams, enhancing its appeal among visitors. Notably, efforts have led to the establishment of an expansive ‘eco corridor’ sprawling across 2,020 hectares within various community forests. This corridor, designed with tourists’ convenience in mind, aims to showcase the area’s natural beauty and wildlife diversity.

Expanding on this initiative, four other community forests under the Sishbar Consumers’ Committee are gearing up to create their own eco corridors. Additionally, the committee emphasizes managing meadows and wetlands to enhance the overall visitor experience.

Local indigenous settlements are actively promoting homestay experiences, adding a cultural dimension to visitors’ stays. Premshankar Mardaniyar Tharu, Central Chairman of the Homestay Association, highlighted the increasing number of households offering homestays and hotels tailored to tourists’ preferences.

Presently, there are over a dozen homestays near community forests within the buffer zone, and plans are underway to further increase their numbers. This collaborative effort aims to welcome more visitors, fostering a deeper connection between nature, wildlife, and cultural experiences for all who explore this enchanting region.
