September 18, Kathmandu – Representatives from Dolpa have claimed that another lake in the district is situated at a higher elevation than Tilicho Lake.
Tilicho Lake, located in Manang, is known to be one of the highest lakes globally, sitting at an elevation of 4,919 meters above sea level. It holds the record for being the highest lake so far.
However, representatives from Dolpa’s Falgaun village, under Dolpo Buddha Rural Municipality Ward No. 6, have made claims about a new lake at an even higher altitude. They have stated that the elevation of this lake, as measured using GPS, is 5,190 meters. According to them, this lake is situated near the 15th pillar of the Nepal-China border.
Officials, including Bhoomishwor Pokhrel, the Chief District Officer of Dolpa, have formed a team, including the Deputy Mayor and Ward No. 6 Chairman, who visited the site and gathered information about the lake. They are in the process of verifying the claims and seeking official confirmation from the relevant government authorities.
“The lake called ‘Tinje’ has a large fissure. After walking for two hours from there, you reach the lake. There are three lakes in total, one large and two smaller ones,” said Chief District Officer Bhoomishwor Pokhrel, adding, “They had previously informed us about having a lake in Falgaun village too, and this time, it seems they have discovered another lake higher than Tilicho. We are starting the official process to confirm it.”
This information about the existence of a lake in Falgaun and another lake at a higher altitude than Tilicho Lake is being reported for the first time, and the government is initiating the process to verify these claims.
