Growing Concerns as Respiratory Disease Spreads in China; Nepal Faces Potential Risk

Health experts have raised alarms over a respiratory disease that has recently affected Chinese children, warning of a potential risk for Nepal. Hospitals in China have reported an influx of patients displaying symptoms such as fever, cough, and breathing difficulties, although the exact cause of the disease remains unidentified.

Amid examinations of the affected children, various pathogens including Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria, the COVID-19 virus, influenza, and sinusitis virus have been detected. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed interest in this mysterious disease and requested a report from China, emphasizing that children seem to be more susceptible.

The Indian government has issued a notice urging health institutions to prepare for the spread of the respiratory illness. Although Nepal has not issued an official notice yet, health experts have expressed concerns due to the proximity and cross-border movement between China and Nepal. Given Nepal’s previous experience with the COVID-19 pandemic originating in China, experts emphasize the importance of vigilance.

Dr. Sher Bahadur Pun, the Research Unit coordinator at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, highlighted the uncertainty of Nepal being unaffected by the disease spreading in China. Dr. Samir Kumar Adhikari, head of the Health Emergency and Disaster Management Unit, emphasized the global interconnectedness, expressing concerns over the potential spread of the illness.

Dr. Anup Raj Bastola, an infectious disease specialist, stressed the need for detailed information about the specific cause and nature of the disease to assess the risk accurately. Similarly, Dr. Rudra Marasini, Director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, indicated that Nepal has not evaluated the full impact of the respiratory illness spreading in China.

While Nepal awaits more information about the nature and causes of the disease, health authorities emphasize the importance of caution and preparedness until a comprehensive evaluation can be made.
