A man, identified as Chandra Ghale from Gorkha, was apprehended by customs officials at Tribhuvan International Airport upon his arrival in Kathmandu from a flydubai flight. Around 14kg of gold was discovered in his possession, concealed both on his chest and in his shoes, leading to his arrest on Thursday night.
Sobhakant Paudel, the Director General of the Department of Customs, mentioned ongoing investigations to ascertain Ghale’s background and the true owner of the gold. The recovered gold is set to undergo weighing and quality testing on Friday.
Director General Paudel further stated that Ghale’s call records and contacts are under scrutiny as part of the inquiry. Enhanced airport surveillance was initiated based on a tip-off regarding Ghale’s arrival on Wednesday, although he landed a day later.
Ghale, observed among the last group of disembarking passengers, was swiftly arrested upon exiting the aircraft. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this significant gold seizure at the airport.
