As frigid temperatures grip the mountainous terrains of Manang district, the mercury descends to a bone-chilling -18 degrees Celsius, severely impacting daily life in the region.
Chief District Officer Subas Kumar Lamichhane reported a sharp drop in temperatures, ranging from -8 to -10 degrees Celsius in the morning and plummeting to as low as -18 degrees Celsius during the night. Areas like Chame and its surroundings have witnessed temperatures between -16 and -18 degrees Celsius, causing tap water to freeze and disrupting regular activities.
The extreme cold has paralyzed routine functions, leading to infrastructure disruptions. Chame Rural Municipality has issued a notice, halting the transportation of construction materials like cement due to the intensifying cold, as confirmed by the municipality’s acting chief administrative officer, Nama Narayan Malla.
Consequently, locals are compelled to temporarily migrate from their villages to escape the harsh weather conditions. The closure of schools and educational institutions has facilitated this temporary exodus, with areas like Lamjung, Kathmandu, and Pokhara becoming preferred destinations during the biting cold.
The adverse weather has prompted the relocation of two police beats from Narpabhumi Rural Municipality to Chame, the district headquarters, to continue providing essential services, as confirmed by CDO Lamichhane.
The plummeting temperatures in Manang district have triggered various disruptions and compelled locals to seek refuge in warmer regions until the weather improves.
