On April 27, Pokhara will host the South Asian Triathlon Championship and the Asian Cup. This lake city has hosted the championship since 2011. Since then, it has been hosted every year with the exception of two that were missed because of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The nearby Lakeside will host the sporting event. The championship is organized by the Nepal Triathlon Association. As per Association president Nilendra Raj Shrestha, the International Triathlon Union has already announced the championship date on its official website.
According to him, the competition will be focused toward the championship’s sprint event. Last year, fifty-three participants from eighteen different countries participated in the competition. The sprint event consists of five kilometers of racing, twenty kilometers of cycling, and 750 meters of swimming in Phewa Lake.
The long-distance race would begin in Gaurighat, travel through Sahidchok, Mustang Chok, Birauta Chok, Damside, then return to Gaurighat via Rastra Bank Chok, Shrestha said.
The championship preparations have begun. At a meeting here on Monday, the office-bearers of the district, regional, and central triathlon associations made the decision to step up the championship preparations and make it more spectacular than in previous years. Shrestha, the president of the association, attended the conference as well.
