A fresh law implemented by the Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality demands that climbers ascending Mount Everest properly dispose of their waste. The rule, called the ‘Base Camp Management Procedure 2080’, aims to keep the mountain clean.
Under this rule, climbers are required to carry special bags to collect their waste, which must be returned upon descent. These bags can hold up to 5 kg of waste. Additionally, climbers must bring back 8 kg of garbage to the base camp.
Only authorized climbers and their assistants are allowed to stay at the base camp, and commercial activities like setting up tents for business purposes are prohibited. Moreover, certain facilities like attached toilets in sleeping tents and commercial establishments like bars and cafes are banned at the base camp.
To preserve the environment, climbers are not allowed to use box tents above the base camp, and open camping is prohibited unless using biodegradable poop bags. Furthermore, helicopters are restricted from flying above Sangboche, except for humanitarian purposes.
This rule also applies to other surrounding mountains, such as Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam, in addition to Mount Everest. The project seeks to maintain these famous mountain areas’ sustainability and purity.
