On International Women’s Day, a group of Nepali ladies are set to travel to Kalapatthar with the goal of bringing attention to the effects of climate change. The tour is intended to draw attention to the melting snow caused by climate change and its effects on local people. It is being organized by Sath Sathai, an organization that works for both women’s empowerment and climate change action.
Led by UN Women Nepal’s representative, Patricia Fernandez-Pacheco, the team bid farewell to 25 women from different sectors at Tribhuvan International Airport. Their mission is to draw global attention to the urgent issue of climate change and its consequences, particularly on the livelihoods of those living in the region.
According to the organisation, the ‘special’ gathering at Kalapatthar on the occasion of the March 8 Day, aims to draw attention of national and international communities to the dire consequences of climate change in the Sagarmatha region and challenges being faced by the mountain population.
The organization had decided to commemorate International Women’s Day this year at Kalapathhar in the Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) region of Solukhumbu district. Women from various backgrounds were planned to trek to the area for the event. During the march, there would be discussions with community leaders and representatives about the effects of climate change.
On March 2nd, at Syangboche, the team would engage in conversations with local representatives and communities on the topic of women’s empowerment in addressing climate change. Prajeeta Karki, the organization’s president, mentioned that the aim is to establish connections between the government and the community to tackle climate change issues effectively.
On March 8th, they’ll arrive at Kalapaththar. The event aims to show how climate change is hurting local communities, farming, and tourism to people worldwide. This year’s International Women’s Day focuses on “Investing in Women to Speed Up Progress.
