Ancient Wonders: Discovering the Legends of Pimbahal Stupa and Jagamadu Pond

Pimbahal , Jagamandu Pond in Patan,Lalitpur.

Although the exact age of the Pimbahal Stupa in Patan, Nepal, is unknown, it is believed to be around 2000 years old. While some claim that Emperor Ashoka was the one who created it, others believe that it may have been constructed after the end of his rule. Despite this uncertainty, it’s considered sacred by Buddhists.

Over the years, the stupa has been renovated many times. It was damaged in the 14th century when invaders attacked Kathmandu Valley. However, it was rebuilt after the Nepali forces defended the area.

Near the stupa is a pond called Jagamadu, or Pimbahal Pukhu. It’s said to be about 600 years old and has a mysterious origin. According to legend, it was created by demons called Lakhes.

One story says the demons terrorized the town until a Brahmin named Gayaḥ Bajya used his magical powers to make them dig the pond. Another tale claims the pond formed overnight.

There’s also a story about a magical stone in the pond, visible only when the water level is low in winter. Locals believe it has powerful abilities.

In the 1950s, an excavation near the pond revealed a passage leading to Gayaḥ Bajya’s meditation room. However, further digging was stopped by a water table.

Despite the mysteries surrounding it, the pond has been an essential water source for Patan residents for centuries and was even used to fight fires in ancient times.
