Nepal is going to stop people from using, bringing in, or taking out e-cigarettes. Dr. Bhakt Bahadur Keshi, who helps people understand health at the Nepal Health Research and Policy Institute, said this during a big meeting about addictive things in Nepal.
The government made rules to control and manage addictive things, and now they are saying no to e-cigarettes. Dr. Keshi said, “Before, there was confusion about this, but now the court has made it clear. Soon, e-cigarettes will be banned in Nepal.”
He also said they sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance to tell them about the ban. After this ban, you won’t be able to buy, sell, share, make, or bring e-cigarettes into Nepal.
During the meeting, Dr. Jayakumar Gurung asked the government to make the tax on addictive things inside the country 35% higher to make it better.
Some people asked the government to put a higher tax on things like hookahs and e-cigarettes so that people use them less.
Another person, Kamal Chaulagai, asked the government to make the rules that already exist work better to stop people from getting addictive things easily.
Dr. Keshi also said they sent a letter to the Ministry of Health and Population to make the tax higher next year. Another official said that one crore people in Nepal spend one billion rupees on tobacco every year.
A study showed that 37,529 people die in Nepal every year. It also showed that 34% of people in Nepal, which is about 67 lakh people, use addictive things.
The study also found out that 38.4% use cigarettes, 67.3% use chewing tobacco, 8.3% use hookahs, 2.2% use e-cigarettes, and 11.1% use weed. Kamal Chaulagai said that more young people are starting to use new things like hookahs and e-cigarettes every year.
