Understanding Jatras: A Window into Nepali Customs and Traditions

With its diverse experiences, Nepal, the country with the towering Himalayas and rich cultural legacy, entices visitors. One such event that explores the core of Nepali customs is the Jatra, a colorful street celebration filled with dancing, music, and joyous celebration. A Jatra is a must-do on your agenda if you want to really experience the local way of life and see Nepal’s cultural diversity up close!

In Nepal Bhasa, the word “Jatra” (pronounced “Ja-tra”) literally means “festival” and describes a wide range of street celebrations unique to the Newar population.  Throughout the year, these festivities take place all over Nepal, but especially in the Kathmandu Valley.  Every Jatra has its distinct customs, ceremonies, and bright displays that turn regular streets into a colorful show.

Although the exact history of Jatras is unknown, estimates place their celebration back hundreds of years, perhaps even to the Lichchhavi era (300–750 AD).  These celebrations are thought to have originated from prehistoric animistic customs and have become intricately linked to Buddhism and Hinduism over time.  Jatras were a means of honoring the gods, commemorating historical occurrences, celebrating harvests, and uniting the community.

Beyond its joyful atmosphere and aesthetic appeal, Jatras are deeply significant for some reasons:

  • Celebration of the Community: Jatras are an occasion for communities to unite, overcoming social barriers and promoting a sense of belonging. Social ties are strengthened as people from all walks of life come together to take part in the celebrations.
  • Religious Expression: Honoring particular deities or remembering religious personalities, many Jatras have a religious significance. The intricate masks, costumes, and ceremonies highlight Nepal’s rich mythology and profound religious beliefs.
  • Cultural Transmission: Jatras provide a means of passing down cultural heritage from one generation to the next. These festivals preserve these traditions by showcasing traditional dances, music, and artistic displays.

To help you get ready for your Jatra experience, here is a guide:

  • When and Where: Jatras are held all over Nepal at different times of the year. The Jatras of Bisket (Bhaktapur), Indra (Kathmandu), Seto Machhendranath (Patan), and Gai (Kathmandu Valley) are a few of the well-known ones. Based on the time of year you plan to travel, look for precise dates and places.
  • What to Expect: Jatras has vivid colors, lively drumming, fascinating dances, and large, joyful crowds. There could be tall chariots pulling gods, mythical figures being portrayed by masked dancers , and a vibrant atmosphere.
  • Dress Code: Although there isn’t a set dress code, it is advised to wear modest apparel that honors cultural customs. You should wear comfortable shoes because you will probably be wandering about in the crowd.
  • Participate with Respect: Keep in mind that Jatras are primarily cultural and religious events. Respect the customs and refrain from interfering with festivities. Choose to watch ceremonies rather than take part in them, and get permission before taking pictures of individuals, especially those who are dressed religiously.

Although at first jatras may seem overwhelming, that is part of their charm.  Accept the colorful chaos, feel the energy, and watch as the essence of Nepali culture is revealed right before your very eyes.  Jatras provides a singular insight into the spirit of the nation, its rich traditions, and its soul.  Put on some cozy shoes, take an extra battery for your camera (you’ll be shooting lots of photos! ), and get ready to witness the once-in-a-lifetime magic of a Nepali Jatra!
