Through a joint mountaineering expedition and commemorative ceremony in Kathmandu, Nepal and South Korea celebrated their 50th anniversary, strengthening their diplomatic ties and highlighting the possibility of future tourist collaboration.
A Historic Climb for Friendship
The celebration featured the summits of Jugal I and Jugal II, previously unclimbed peaks in Sindhupalchowk district near Kathmandu. From April 5th to April 27th, 2024, a team consisting of Korean and Nepali members, led by Um Hong Gil and Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, set out on an expedition that represented shared adventure and cooperation.

On April 27th, Nepal’s Minister for Culture, Civil Aviation, and Tourism, Hit Bahadur Tamang, attended a commemorative event in Kathmandu, highlighting the 50-year mutual respect and trust between the two nations and the success of their cooperation in various fields.
Shared Values and Continued Cooperation
The Korean Ambassador to Nepal, Mr. Park Tae-Young, emphasized the value of respect and common values in cultivating a 50-year alliance. He declared Nepal a priority cooperation country for fifteen years, focusing on sectors like ICT, healthcare, agriculture, and vocational education.
The event featured prominent Nepali and Korean figures, including parliament members, diplomats, government officials, media personnel, and tourism industry representatives, with the expedition team’s presence adding a special touch.
The Nepal-Korea relationship has seen a significant milestone with a successful joint expedition and celebratory event, paving the way for further collaboration in tourism and other mutually beneficial areas.
