Kathmandu, Nepal – [May,8] – The Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project (SMDMP), a National Pride Project of Nepal, marks an important milestone with the completion of of a 13. 3 km tunnel. This achievement is significant in bringing the required irrigation and renewable energy resources to the country.
As of Baishak 26, 2081, 13,300 meters of the tunnel have been excavated, which marks 100% completion. Head of the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multi-Purpose Project, Mitra Baral, said that the tunnel breakthrough is completed a year before constantly scheduled. The tunnel was finished in 9 months, with an extraordinarily good rate of 72 meters per day in 19 months. This impressive feat is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the engineers, workers, and everyone involved in the project.
Project Significance:
The SMDMP is an inter-basin water transfer project designed to divert water from the Sunkoshi River to the Marin River, a tributary of the Bagmati River. This diverted water will then be channelized into the Bagmati Irrigation System, providing a vital lifeline for 122,000 hectares of agricultural land across five districts: Rautahat, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, and Bara. These drought-prone districts have long struggled with water scarcity. Thus SMDMP is of great significance to improve the agricultural productivity and livelihood of the rural people.
Beyond Irrigation: Hydropower Generation
The project also boasts a hydropower component. The diverted water will flow through the completed tunnel and power generating station located in Kamalamai municipality. This station is estimated to produce 31.07 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity, contributing to Nepal’s energy security and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Looking Ahead:
With the tunnel construction complete, the SMDMP can now progress towards other crucial stages, such as powerhouse construction and system integration. The project’s successful completion holds immense potential for Nepal’s agricultural sector and its transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
