Sandakpur: The Gem of East Nepal

Sandakpur is an amazing place located in the Illam district in eastern Nepal. It is the highest peak in the district, rising to a height of 3665 meters (11,930 ft). Sandakpur is situated on the Singalila Ridge, which forms the border between West Bengal, India, and Nepal. This unique location, bordering Singalila National Park and offering a charming village with a handful of accommodations at its peak, makes Sandakpur a popular destination for both tourists and adventurers.

Your Guide to Reaching Sandakpur from Ilam

The journey to Sandakpur, a charming village nestled amidst the mountains, offers breathtaking scenery and a chance to experience the local way of life.

Choose your path: Jeep or Trek?

This adventurous trip may be completed in two ways: a thrilling Jeep experience or a multi-day trek—the option is yours!

By Jeep:

  • A Scenic Ride: Prepare for a 5-7 hour journey, depending on pauses and road conditions. The path goes through Ilam, Maipokhari, Maimajhuwa, and ultimately Sandakpur.
  • Embrace Flexibility: Jeeps may not follow a fixed timetable. Early mornings are popular for shared jeeps, but a private jeep might provide more freedom.

For the Trekkers:

  • Immerse Yourself in Nature: Trade the Jeep for your own two feet and go on a three-day journey.
  • The Itinerary:
    • Day 1: Hike from Ilam Bazaar to Maipokhari (approximately 6 hours). Rest and recharge for the next leg of your adventure.
    • Day 2: Enjoy a scenic 5-hour trek from Maipokhari to Maimajhuwa. Spend the night surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains.
    • Day 3: Conquer the final stretch—a 6-7 hour trek from Maimajhuwa to your destination, Sandakpur.

Alternative Route:

If Phidim is your starting point, do not worry! Sandakpur is accessible by jeep from Kania and Pashupatinagar, and the journey takes around 6-7 hours.

Whatever direction you take, this trek delivers stunning views, lovely villages, and an amazing experience in the heart of Nepal.

Sandakpur’s traditional customs and regional favorites

The social legacy of Sandakpur is complex and dynamic, influenced by both Nepal and India. The Sherpa, Rai, and Limbu people, who are known for their kindness, hospitality, and distinctive customs, make up the majority of the local population. By visiting traditional villages, participating in local festivals, and eating regional delicacies like momos, thukpa, and churpi, visitors to Sandakpur can fully immerse themselves in the culture.

Sandakpur tourist attractions and the best time to visit

Sandakpur’s main attraction is undoubtedly its breathtaking viewpoints. From the peak, one can see the world’s five highest mountains: Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. The view of the entire Kangchenjunga Range is quite breathtaking since Sandakpur is one of the few places on Earth where the full range is visible. Sandakpur offers equally amazing views of the sunrise and sunset, with the changing light turning the snow-capped peaks and surrounding landscape into various colors.

Things to do outside in Sandakpur

Apart from its stunning surroundings, Sandakpur offers visitors a range of outdoor sports. Trekking and hiking are popular activities in the area because there are so many scenic paths.
