On May 29th, Nepal and New Zealand observe International Everest Day, which honors Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s 1953 summit. This year’s celebrations in Lalitpur are unique in that they highlight a local legend while also encouraging adventure in the next generation.
Lalitpur Celebrates Local Everest Hero
The Children’s Rights Committee of Lalitpur Metropolitan Municipality Ward No. 26 organized a climbing festival to honor Ms. Kalpana Maharjan, a world record holder from Lalitpur who put the Lalitpur flag on the summit in 2019, motivating the community.
Inspiring Young Climbers
The event featured a one-day introductory climbing session for youngsters from the Mahalakshmi Municipality’s community schools. This effort sought to introduce young minds to the world of climbing and instill a desire for adventure.
Climbing Competition Tests Skills and Determination
The centerpiece of the celebration was a climbing competition held at the Pasang Lhamu Climbing Centre in Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu. This event served as a tribute to Ms. Maharjan’s achievement. Students from Ganesh Mavi School in Godavari Municipality participated with great enthusiasm, with a total of 60 climbers showcasing their skills and determination.
More Than Just a Competition: A Celebration of Community
This event went beyond a mere climbing competition. It was a strong sign of community spirit, with Ms. Maharjan’s triumphant flag flying over Everest acting as a unifying force. The Children’s Rights Committee effectively inspired pride and a spirit of adventure in the young participants.
This not only showcases Lalitpur's World Everest Day celebrations but also subtly promotes Nepal as a top climbing destination.
