ICIMOD to Launch ‘Women on Ice’ Program in Manang, Nepal

ICIMOD to launch Women on Ice program in December 2024in Manang

ICIMOD is excited to announce the launch of “Women on Ice“. It is a pioneering initiative to empower and support the next generation of female cryosphere researchers. The cryosphere refers to that part of Earth’s surface where water is in solid form, typically as ice or snow. These include; Glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, permafrost, Icebergs, and frozen lakes.

This program aims to empower women in the field of cryosphere science. In this field, women make up only one-third of researchers.

About Women on Ice

This winter, ICIMOD will select 10 aspiring female glaciologists, aged 21 to 28, from the Hindu Kush Himalayan region to participate in their first all-women cryosphere expedition to Ponkar Glacier in Manang, Nepal. This expedition, scheduled for December 2024, is fully funded and open to women from Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. No prior experience in science or glaciology is necessary.

Program Highlights

Participants in the Women on Ice program will receive comprehensive training in various essential skills:

  • Surviving in challenging environments
  • Identifying glacial features
  • Understanding the impact of climate change on glaciers
  • Collecting and analyzing valuable data

From ICIMOD Leaders

Izabella Koziell, Deputy Director General of ICIMOD, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “Achieving the scale of change the world needs requires all of humanity’s skills, talent, and knowledge. Cryosphere science still has a significant gender gap, and Women on Ice is an essential step in addressing this issue.”

Pema Gyamtsho, Director General of ICIMOD, shares his enthusiasm: “Women on Ice is part of our commitment to gender equality and social inclusion. We aim to inspire more girls to pursue science careers by showcasing the wide range of opportunities available. A more diverse scientific community will lead to a more sustainable and equitable future.”

Expedition Details

The expedition, taking place from December 2-13, will include two mountaineering guides, a doctor, and four ICIMOD experts. Participants must pass a medical check-up to ensure they are fit for the expedition and be prepared for a strenuous hike and challenging conditions.
