The primary route to the sacred Lake Mansarovar and Mt.Kailash in Tibet, China, has reopened after being closed by heavy rains. The road, which serves as an important route for Hindu and Buddhist devotees, has been closed since last Friday when the high Kerung River swept away a 5-kilometer stretch at Miteri Pul (Friendship Bridge).
Vehicle traffic resumed on Sunday afternoon as Chinese authorities quickly rebuilt the damaged parts, according to Rasuwa’s Chief District Officer, Bednidhi Khanal. Approximately 500 passengers returning to Nepal from Kerung and 100 devotees headed to Lake Mansarovar were stuck by the shutdown, but have ultimately restarted their trips after completing immigration paperwork.
The Nepal Police and Rasuwa’s Armed Police Force helped to ensure visitors’ safety. Lake Mansarovar which is located at the southern foot of Mt.Kailash, 2,000 kilometers from Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, is one of the most important religious destinations for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is accessible from Nepal’s Humla region.
