Preparations for the big Indrajatra festival have started. It is a major cultural festival in Kathmandu Valley. Chariot construction and street cleaning are progressing quickly in and around Kathmandu’s Basantapur Durbar Square. These indicate the coming of one of the year’s most awaited festivities.
The festival begins on Bhadra Shukla Dwadashi. It will officially begin with the lifting of the “lingo,” a ceremonial pole with the Indra flag, in front of Hanumandhoka. This marks the start of eight days of festivities with traditional dances, bright chariot parades, and prayers to numerous deities. This practice, known as ‘Indradhvajotthan,’ is followed by the worship of Bhairav at the foot of the temple which marks the beginning of the festival.

Indrajatra has deep historical and religious importance. It represents the victory over enemies and the celebration of might. It is commonly believed that worshiping Indradhvaj during this time brings heavenly power and benefits. The event is celebrated not only in Kathmandu, but also in other sections of the valley, including Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Dolakha, with similar enthusiasm and magnificence.
The Indrajatra is a vibrant representation of the Kathmandu Valley’s rich cultural legacy. The community comes together to commemorate tradition, conduct rituals, and participate in festive celebrations.
