The Himalayan Art Festival is an annual event in Nepal. It is for showcasing the works of well known and emerging Nepali artists across various mediums. The event aims to celebrate and promote the country’s rich artistic heritage and contemporary creativity.
The seventh Himalayan Art Festival (HAF) will be held at the Nepal Art Council in Babermahal from September 8 to 14, 2024. The exhibition showcases the work of more than 115 Nepali artists, including known and upcoming artists from various mediums.
Curators Sagar Manandhar and Pratima Thakali organized the exhibition around the artists’ career paths. According to Pratima Thakali, “They have organized the artworks by career stage to give viewers a sense of progression.” Manandhar added, “The festival has brought back the spirit of collaboration in Nepal’s art community, which is refreshing to see.”
The tribute artist for this year is senior artist Sharada Chitrakar, who is also the guest of honor. Her artworks are demonstrated with a documentary about her life. Chitrakar said: “I hope my journey inspires more women to pursue art despite the challenges.”
The show includes a wide variety of works, from Batsa Gopal Vaidhya’s beautiful Ganesh painting to Kiran Manandhar’s semi-abstract series. Rabindra Cycle, an experimental artist, drew attention to his thought-provoking wheel installation, which symbolised the ever-active human mind.
In addition to the artwork, the festival organizes interactive events such as a panel discussion with well-known artists and a guided exhibition tour on September 12. The famous Prashanta Scholarship Award, which recognizes excellent art students, will be given on September 11.
