Reconstruction of Nuwakot’s Sattale Palace Resumes After Delays

Sattale palace, Nuwakot

Sattale palace (seven-storey) located in the Trishuli of Nuwakot had been damaged due to an earthquake in 2015. The Chinese government has tried to rebuild earthquake-damaged religious and cultural heritage sites. This project comes nine years after a terrible earthquake that caused severe cultural and historical harm.

Rajan Shrestha, Mayor of Bidur Municipality, confirmed that China has resumed reconstruction work. “We have made all the necessary arrangements, including access roads for construction materials, uninterrupted electricity supply, a storage site for materials, and water access to the palace area,” he said. These modifications were made in response to the Chinese technical team’s request to speed up rebuilding.

In 2019, Nepal and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to restore eight historical and religious sites in Nuwakot. The first phase will focus on rebuilding the Sattale palace, security home, and Rangamahal while preserving the original architectural style. Sunil Poudel, Chief of the Nuwakot Palace Maintenance Office, stated, “Maintaining the authenticity of these structures is our top priority.”

The second phase will include the reconstruction of temples from the Lichchhavi era, including Taleju (Tulja Bhawani), Setopati, Lampati, Vishnu, and Narayan. Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, work on these culturally significant sites has resumed.

A technical team from the ‘Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage’ recently returned to the site to inspect the present state and continue the repair work.
