After a long wait for nine-years, Kathmandu’s well-known Dharahara has again been reopened to the public. The ceremonial reopening was held on Thursday, on the same day as Constitution Day. It represents perseverance and national pride. The newly built tower is near the ancient Bhimsen Stambha which was badly damaged in the April 25, 2015 earthquake.
Although Dharahara is now open, the Ministry of Urban Development has said that development is 98% complete. While some painting and ornamental touches need to be completed, these minor elements are unlikely to have an impact on the tourist experience.
On Wednesday, the tower was opened to a small group of people for demonstration purposes. This reopening comes after its original opening by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on April 24, 2021. Around that time the Dharahara was just 42% completed. Since then, the continuous development has pushed the renowned monument closer to its completion.
The public can enjoy free access to the tower briefly, while the government finalizes additional management plans. Despite some finishing touches that remain, the building is secure and ready for tourists to revisit this piece of Nepalese history.
