The Government of Nepal has opened up 57 new mountains for climbing to stimulate adventure tourism. This decision was taken during a Council of Ministers meeting on October 7, after recommendations from the Department of Tourism.
The newly opened peaks range in height from 5,000 to 6,500 meters, bringing Nepal’s total number of climbable mountains to 461. Rakesh Gurung, Director of the Department of Tourism, stated that this effort aims to increase climbing options for both domestic and international visitors.
Nimanuru Sherpa, President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), hailed the move, stating that it will assist in establishing new tourism locations. He additionally requested the government to open more mountains in the future, pointing out that Nepal has more than 2,000 appropriate peaks.
Sherpa highlighted the importance of improved infrastructure and communication in these newly accessible places to attract more visitors. The goal is to boost the number of international visitors visiting Nepal.
