Santhal Fair in Jhapa Marks 44 Years of Cultural Celebration

The Santhal fair in Kamal Rural Municipality, Jhapa, has been an important part of Dashain celebrations for 44 years. This year’s fair, held at Mangalbare, Ward No. 5, drew a big crowd. The primary attraction was the Santhal dance.

Mayor Hukum Singh Rai praised the passion of rivals and viewers as Santhal groups from all across Jhapa participated in the traditional dance competition. The festival has been held every year at the same location since 1980. It celebrates the Santhal community’s rich cultural legacy.

The Sagun Youth Club, which organizes the fair, is supported by the local government. According to Club President Devi Prasad Angdambe, 10 to 12 Santhal dance groups participate each year. This practice helps to preserve the history of the Santhal group.

The Santhal dance is characterized by colorful costumes, indigenous instruments such as the Madal and Dhol, and coordinated movements. It is a distinct cultural manifestation of the Santhal people, an underprivileged smaller part of Koshi Province.
