Nepal’s tea industry continues to shine on the global stage, with the Nepal Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (NMC) making a significant impact. The cooperative recently exported 3,64,044 kilograms of tea to India, generating revenue of Rs 11.43 crore (Rs 114.3 million).
Promoting Quality and Collaboration
Rabindra Pandey, the business head of NMC, highlighted the cooperative’s commitment to producing high-quality tea. “We focus on quality tea production, purchasing green leaves from our member farmers and turning them into premium prepared tea,” Pandey shared.
The cooperative works closely with 350 tea farmers, ensuring fair compensation and timely payments. Farmers receive their earnings promptly on the 15th of every month, boosting their financial security.
Investment in Tea Production
To enhance production, NMC has invested Rs 130 million and operates three advanced tea processing factories in:
- Suryodaya-1, Ilam
- Maijogmai-1, Ilam
- Mechinagar-5, Jhapa
These factories produce black, orthodox, and green tea under the NMC brand, catering to domestic and international markets.
Employment and Economic Growth
The cooperative’s tea business has created direct employment for 52 individuals, contributing to the economic development of the region. Additionally, the tea produced in Ilam remains a favorite among consumers, further solidifying Nepal’s reputation for quality tea.
Domestic and Export Success
While 10% of the tea is consumed within Nepal, the majority is exported to India, showcasing Nepal’s growing presence in the global tea market.
Diversified Ventures for Community Upliftment
Apart from tea production, NMC is actively involved in other ventures, including:
- Savings and loan services
- Agricultural farming
- Dairy industry
- A cooperative-run supermarket
These initiatives ensure steady economic opportunities for local communities, empowering farmers and enhancing their livelihoods.
