Nepal’s livestock sector contributes 7% to the nation’s GDP

Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Ram Nath Adhikari highlighted the crucial role of Nepal’s livestock sector in contributing to the nation’s economy and supporting livelihoods during a program organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Kathmandu.

The minister stated that the livestock sector accounts for 7% of Nepal’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides a vital source of income and sustenance for millions of Nepalis. However, he acknowledged that the sector faces numerous challenges, including issues related to nutrition, breeding, animal health, marketing inefficiencies, and high production costs.

Addressing global health concerns, Minister Adhikari also emphasized the growing risks posed by zoonotic diseases such as bird flu and rabies, which can transmit from animals to humans. “The complexities arising from these diseases demand a sustainable and competent animal health system,” he stated.

The minister praised the FAO for its pivotal role in promoting the One Health approach, which aims to strengthen Nepal’s animal health system by integrating human, animal, and environmental health practices. “FAO Nepal has been an invaluable partner in addressing these challenges,” he remarked.

Challenges in the Livestock Sector

The livestock sector in Nepal remains under pressure due to:

  • Limited access to proper nutrition and breeding techniques.
  • High production costs, reducing profitability for farmers.
  • Insufficient infrastructure for animal health and disease control.
  • Growing threats of zoonotic diseases, affecting both animals and humans.

The Role of the FAO

The FAO has been instrumental in supporting Nepal’s livestock sector through programs that enhance:

  • Disease prevention and management strategies.
  • Livestock productivity and health.
  • Sustainable livestock farming practices to mitigate environmental impact.

Way Forward

Minister Adhikari stressed the importance of building a robust animal health system and adopting sustainable practices to address these challenges. A stronger focus on research, innovation, and international collaboration could transform Nepal’s livestock industry into a more resilient and productive sector, contributing even more significantly to the nation’s GDP.
