The Process: From Steel to Khukuri
Heating and Forging.
Your trip begins by heating raw steel in a fiery furnace until it is red hot. Then, with a hammer in hand, you will begin creating the classic Khukuri curve. This segment is enjoyable, challenging, and provides an excellent arm exercise!
Grinding and sharpening.
Once the blade is formed, it is time to grind and sharpen. Sparks will fly (literally) as you sharpen your Khukuri. Safety goggles are required, but don’t worry—your blacksmith mentor will help you every step of the way.
Handle and Finishing.
Next, attach a handle, which is typically made of rosewood or buffalo horn. This is where your Khukuri actually comes alive! After a final polish, you’ll have a handmade, completely working blade that you manufactured.
