The government has started giving Nepali citizenship certificates to Nepali citizens living abroad (NRNs). This is called NRN citizenship.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal handed out NRN citizenship certificates to the Executive President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), Badri KC, and President Kul Acharya. This happened during an event at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday.
The District Administration Office in Kathmandu issued an NRN citizenship certificate to NRNA Executive President KC on Monday. President Acharya received his certificate from the District Administration Office in Parbat on Sunday. The chief district officers gave the certificates to PM Dahal earlier.
NRN citizenship certificates are provided according to Article 14 of the Nepal Constitution. Changes to the Nepal Citizenship Act, of 2063, have made this process easier. NRNs get Nepali citizenship, which gives them economic, social, and cultural rights.
At the event, the Secretary of the home ministry, Dinesh Bhattarai, mentioned that the government arranged to give out NRN citizenship certificates in all 77 districts. This means that NRNs can start applying for these certificates from today.
The NRNA had been requesting citizenship for NRNs for a long time.
