On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Pokhara for a four-day official visit to Nepal. Following that, he boarded a helicopter provided via the Nepali Army to reach Annapurna Base Camp. Mr. Guterres’ agenda for this prominent destination includes engaging in dialogues with the local populace to address pressing issues such as the impact of climate change in the Himalayan region and the condition of the mountains. Nestled at an impressive altitude of 4,130 meters above sea level, the Annapurna Base Camp offers a unique setting for these crucial discussions.
Annapurna Base Camp, a globally celebrated trekking destination, is famed for its natural beauty and cultural richness. The trek around the base of Mt. Annapurna is diagnosed as one of the best treks globally. Mt. Annapurna, the 10th highest peak worldwide, stands at an impressive 8,091 meters (26,545 toes) above sea level and is renowned for the challenges and dangers related to its ascent.
Since the famous 1950 expedition headed by Maurice Herzog, which marked the first successful ascent of an eight-thousand-meter peak, this region has drawn explorers from all over the world. Travelers from Europe, America, Malaysia, China, and Korea are drawn to the Annapurna Base Camp for trekking adventures.
The area gained further popularity following Eric Simpton’s trek to the Annapurna Base Camp in 1996, solidifying its status as a premier trekking destination. To celebrate the significance of Mt. Annapurna’s first ascent, an annual marathon competition is held from the Base Camp to Ghandruk on Annapurna Ascent Day.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers breathtaking mountain vistas and an immersive experience of traditional Nepali village life. The route meanders through stunning landscapes, charming Gurung and Magar villages, and lush green Rhododendron, bamboo, and alpine forests.
