
Lakhamari is a type of sweet of Newars.Lakhamari is a traditional crunchy sweet bread which is prepared during various festivals and celebrations like weddings.
Lakhamaris are given to the guests at the wedding ceremony in Newari culture.It is also a part of Marriage Supari sets, which are a major ceremonial element at marriages in Nepal. Offerings are given to the bride by the groom before the wedding ceremony in order to confirm the relationship.
It is made in different shapes and sizes but they all taste the same with various of sweetness.Butter, sugar, flour, and other ingredients are used for preparing it. Depending on the shape, it can be made in a number of shapes with different names.
It is customarily given to guests of marriage ceremony in some Newar subculture. Prior to marriage, the groom has to provide ‘lakhamaari’s to the bride’s family, which they will send along with the invitation card for marriage. However, lakhamaaris will only be sent to close relatives.
Lakhamari can be stored dry for many days. There are different kinds of lakhamari for different purposes. Joprasad is one type of Lakhamari which is mostly used during big celebrations like marriage and major festivals. These days it is also consumed as snacks on a daily basis.
