Keeping Everest Pristine: The SPCC Story

Adventurers often travel to Nepal’s Khumbu area, which includes Sagarmatha National Park and Everest Base Camp. But with beauty comes responsibility, particularly when it comes to protecting our fragile ecosystems. Here is where the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) plays in preserving the cleanliness of the Everest region.

A Community Effort for Sustainable Practices

The SPCC, founded in 1991 by the Khumbu Sherpa people, is a community-based non-governmental organization aiming to support sustainable waste management through appropriate infrastructure development, promote waste segregation, and encourage community involvement.

The SPCC began the “Carry Me Back (CMB)” initiative in the autumn of 2019 as part of their commitment to reducing, reusing, and recycling garbage in the area. Through this program, recyclable bags may be collected by trekkers and guides from certain locations, such as the recently opened Pangboche station. The bags are then dropped off at Lukla for appropriate recycling in Kathmandu.

Measurable Success: Preserving the Khumbu for Generations

In order to reduce environmental pollution, the SPCC successfully collected 18,080 PET bottles at the Namche Bazaar waste management facility in the spring of 2023. The bottles were then transported and shredded through the CMB program.

Partnering with the SPCC: Be a Responsible Traveler

The SPCC’s efforts to promote ecotourism are highly dependent on responsible tourism practices. If you are planning to visit in the future, here are some ways in which you could help out:

  • Make eco-friendly gear choices and travel light.
  • Pay attention to what you eat, and stay away from single-use plastics.
  • Participate in the CMB program by utilizing the designated stations.
  • Support local businesses and initiatives focused on sustainability.

Experience the magic and embrace responsibility.

The Khumbu area of Nepal provides unparalleled adventure and beauty. We can all help to guarantee that this pristine ecosystem continues to be a source of wonder and inspiration for future generations by partnering with the SPCC and adopting responsible practices.
