Kathmandu metropolitan city has inaugurated the first ever falcha-style bus stand in Baneshwor. Ramkumar KC, ward president of KMC-10 has inaugurated the new falcha style stop. The Falcha style, which originated in the Malla period, is characterized by intricate woodcarvings and a distinctive roof design.
Flacha refers to the traditional rest area, which is specific to Newari architecture. The new bus stand in Baneshwor features artistic elements like Tham (wooden struts), Nidal (carved roof beams), and Dalin (traditional shingles). It is one of the first of its kind in Nepal, setting an example of promoting and preserving our traditional architecture. It is also a stellar example of integrating traditional architecture into urban projects.
This model bus stop provides shelter and seating for people and also serves as a unique landmark, reflecting modern utility with Kathmandu’s rich cultural heritage.
Two falcha stops planned
This project includes two Falcha-style bus stops on the Baneshwar-Babarmahal road section. The one on the route from Baneshwar to Babarmahal is now operational, while the other stop is expected to be completed by June 2024.
Ramkumar KC, ward president of KMC-10 said, ”This architecture must be protected and preserved by everyone. He mentions that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect public property.” He also mentioned that these structures should not be affected by political movements or riots, as Baneshwor is the hub of political events.
The total cost to build these two falcha stops is 62 lakh rupees.
The opening of this bus stand is part of a broader initiative by Kathmandu Metropolitan City to modernize public transportation hubs while preserving the city’s cultural heritage.
