According to Srimad Pashupati Puran, it says that when Lord Shiva got impressed by Bhakta Prahlad prayer, he appeared in the Shivapuri mountain, and from his vocal bagmati was originated. Shivapuri Nagarjuna National Park is one of the nearest and probably the best hiking places to complete within one day from Kathmandu. This hiking route is very well managed and raw. The national park even has an information board at every interval. 

Baghdwar is the actual source of the Bagmati River. At the top, the mouth of a tiger-shaped rock structure is where the Bagmati River begins. The river then continues south, passing through the Kathmandu Valley and into India, where it joins the kamala river which contributes the  the Ganges River system. For millions of people, the river’s  provides water for drinking, agriculture, and religious rites.

The Langtang and Ganesh Himal mountain ranges, as well as other Himalayan ranges, are breathtakingly visible from the Baghdwar walk. It’s a perfect getaway from the busyness of the city because of its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking natural scenery. 

The best time to visit 

The best time to visit is in the months of March to May, and you can also go in the months of September to November. During those times, excellent weather and clear skies provide the perfect conditions for hiking and seeing the sites.

  • 100 rupees for Nepalese
  • 600 rupees for SAARC Nations 
  • 1000 rupees for other countries 

Bike entry fees 

  • additional 50 or 100 Rs (till Panimuhan helipad)

Things to bring 

  • light trekking shoes 
  • an umbrella 
  • water (at least two liters), 
  • a hiking stick (if you want one), 
  • energy bars (optional)
  • first-aid kit in case of emergency 

Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours 

Routes: New Road Gate-Budhanilkantha, Panimuhan-Narayan Gopal Chowk (entry), the 2.5-hour Helipad-Baghdwar route-Shivapuri Peak to Baghdwar.
