The first hunting season in the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve has kicked off, allowing hunters to target 12 Bharal (Himalayan blue sheep), eight Himalayan tahr, and 11 wild boars. This season runs from September to October, with a second season scheduled for March to April.
An Australian hunter, working with Nepal Travels & Expedition, bagged the first Bharal of the season, which weighed over 70 kg. In total, four companies have received permits to lead foreign hunters into the reserve, and 12 international hunters are expected this season.
Bharal hunting permits begin at Rs 150,000, Himalayan tahr at Rs 75,000, and wild boar at Rs 10,000. However, competitive bidding frequently drives prices up. The highest bid for Bharal was Rs 1.23 million, while Himalayan tahr sold for Rs 725,000.
The hunting reserve, which covers 1,325 square kilometers, is home to a variety of animals, including 32 mammal and 164 bird species. The location draws hunters from all over the world, offering a unique experience while supporting conservation and ethical tourism.
