Chhath is a traditional symbol of the Terai. It honors the Sun God for his vitality and longevity. Throughout the four days, followers perform a variety of rites. It includes holy baths, fasting, and offering “argha” (water) to both the rising and setting sun. The first day is dedicated to purifying oneself through bathing and home cleaning. The second day is spent fasting, which is broken only after sunset with offerings of rice porridge and fruit. The third day, considered the most lively, sees devotees gather beside ponds and rivers with offerings for the setting sun. It is frequently accompanied by traditional folk music that reflects Chhath’s cultural legacy.

In Madhes Province, preparations began shortly after the end of Tihar. Devotees clean water bodies, build worship ghats, and organize Chhath marketplaces filled with supplies. Many regions, including Wards 1, 2, and 14 in Bardibas, are seeing significant community engagement. Locals, government assistance, and donations have all helped to make it a grand festival. The installation of lights, floral decorations, and vibrant welcoming gates adds to the festival’s magnificence.

According to Bijay Mahato, Ward-14 chairperson in Bardibas, community donations and municipal assistance have been critical. Around 300 Ghats are being prepared in Bardibas alone, with over 2,000 devotees anticipated to attend. Similar planning is taking place in surrounding regions, like Deurali Pond and the Madaha River reservoir, with all 15 municipalities in Mahottari actively participating.

As the festival approaches, Terai’s streets and ponds come to life, expressing the communal energy and deep-rooted cultural faith that define Chhat.
